WATCHMAN™ Device Implantation

Stroke Risk Reduction for AFib Patients in Vista, Oceanside & Carlsbad

At Tri-City Cardiology and Arrhythmia Services, we offer a safer, long-term alternative to blood thinners for patients with non-valvular atrial fibrillation (AFib). The WATCHMAN™ device is a minimally invasive implant that reduces the risk of stroke — without the ongoing need for anticoagulant medications.

We proudly serve patients in Vista, Oceanside, Carlsbad, and surrounding areas of North County San Diego, delivering cutting-edge care close to home.

What Is the WATCHMAN™ Device?

The WATCHMAN™ Left Atrial Appendage Closure (LAAC) device is a small, umbrella-shaped implant placed inside the heart’s left atrial appendage (LAA) — a pocket-like area where blood clots often form in AFib patients.

By sealing off this area, the device prevents clots from entering the bloodstream, thereby significantly reducing the risk of stroke. It is an FDA-approved alternative to long-term blood thinners like warfarin or Eliquis® for patients with non-valvular atrial fibrillation.

Who Is a Candidate for WATCHMAN?

The WATCHMAN device may be right for you if:
    •    You have non-valvular atrial fibrillation
    •    You are at increased risk of stroke
    •    You have difficulty tolerating or are at risk from long-term use of blood thinners
    •    You are seeking a permanent, non-pharmaceutical stroke prevention option

Our team, led by Dr. Mohammad Pash and Dr. Aaron Yung, will conduct a thorough evaluation to determine if WATCHMAN is a safe and effective choice for your condition.

Benefits of WATCHMAN™ Implantation

  •    Reduces risk of stroke related to AFib
    •    Eliminates the long-term need for blood thinners
    •    Minimally invasive — performed via catheter through a vein in the leg
    •    Short recovery time — most patients return home the next day
    •    Proven track record with over 300,000 implants worldwide

What to Expect During the Procedure

Pre-procedure Evaluation: Imaging and blood tests are performed to assess your heart’s structure and confirm candidacy.
Implantation: The WATCHMAN is inserted through a catheter (usually in the groin) and positioned in the left atrial appendage.
Recovery: The procedure typically takes under an hour. You’ll rest overnight and return home the next day.
Follow-Up: You’ll continue on a short course of blood thinners until your heart tissue fully seals the device (usually within 45 days), after which most patients can stop anticoagulant therapy altogether.
